This large-scale study evaluated whether protected areas around the world actually reduce human pressures by comparing changes in indicators such as cropland conversion and human footprint inside protected areas against matched unprotected areas. The authors found that, on average, protected areas did reduce pressures relative to comparable unprotected land, but that effectiveness varied widely and that many protected areas experienced increasing pressure over time. Crucially, by using rigorous matching methods, the study addressed the bias that parks are often placed in remote, low-pressure locations, isolating their true effect. The findings tempered both optimism and despair, showing protected areas help but are no panacea. It matters for big cats because their reserves must hold back agriculture, settlement, and infrastructure; the study provides a global, methodologically careful baseline for understanding how well, and how unevenly, the protected-area network is actually performing.
