Research overview: predator-proofing corrals to stop snow leopard surplus killing

This overview reviews efforts to reinforce nighttime livestock corrals across snow leopard range to prevent the catastrophic multiple-kill events that occur when a cat enters an open pen and kills many animals in confined panic. It synthesises programs that add wire-mesh roofs, solid doors, and raised walls to traditional stone corrals in Ladakh, Spiti, Pakistan, Mongolia, and Central Asia. The literature reports sharp declines in surplus killing and associated retaliation after corral improvement, alongside questions of cost, maintenance, and reaching remote pastures. The survey frames corral predator-proofing as one of the most cost-effective and widely endorsed snow leopard conflict interventions, directly targeting the losses that most inflame herders.
