Although focused on small-mammal populations, this paper is widely credited with formalizing the minimum convex polygon as a measure of an animal's home range, the smallest convex shape enclosing all recorded locations. The MCP became the default home-range estimator for generations of wildlife studies, including the first telemetry work on big cats, because it is simple, intuitive, and easy to compute by hand. Its weaknesses, sensitivity to outliers and sample size and an inability to describe internal use intensity, drove the later development of kernel and movement-based estimators. Citing Mohr situates modern home-range science in its historical roots and explains why MCP areas still appear in the literature as a coarse, comparable benchmark for felid space use.
