Distinct predatory behaviors in scimitar- and dirk-toothed sabertooth cats

By quantifying cranial geometry across machairodonts and comparing it with biomechanical expectations, the authors found that the dirk-toothed Smilodon had a skull configuration suited to a powerful, controlled bite on immobilized prey, consistent with grappling victims using its robust forelimbs. The scimitar-toothed Homotherium showed a contrasting morphology indicating a different, more active predatory style aligned with its cursorial body. The work provided quantitative support for the long-standing idea that the two sabertooth ecomorphs represented genuinely distinct hunting adaptations rather than minor variations on a single theme, refining models of machairodont predation.
