Oldest Known Pantherine Skull and Evolution of the Tiger

View source ↗This study described Panthera zdanskyi, an exceptionally complete fossil cat skull from northwestern China that illuminates the early evolution of the tiger lineage. Dated to the Pliocene, the specimen, informally dubbed the Longdan tiger, displays a mosaic of primitive and tiger-like features and is interpreted as a close relative or early member of the tiger's evolutionary line. The authors used it to reconstruct the timing and pattern of pantherine diversification and to argue for an Asian origin of the tiger and its relatives. By providing a rare, well-preserved early pantherine, the work clarified how the modern big-cat species emerged from their common ancestor and offered a valuable calibration point for combining the fossil record with molecular estimates of Panthera evolution.
