The researchers identified nepetalactol as a potent active iridoid in silver vine that triggers the rubbing response, and showed the behavior transfers the compound onto the cat's fur. Crucially, they demonstrated that these iridoids repel mosquitoes, so a cat that anoints itself by rubbing on the plant gains protection against mosquito bites and the pathogens mosquitoes carry. The work combined chemical analysis, behavioral testing, and assays of mosquito landing to connect a long-puzzling feline behavior to an adaptive, insect-repellent function. It also implicated the opioid reward system in the response.
