The sand cat is the only felid largely confined to true desert, ranging in scattered populations across the Sahara, the Arabian Peninsula, and the deserts of central Asia. This overview compiles records describing its association with sandy and stony deserts, sparse vegetation, and dune fields where few other cats venture. Its distribution is naturally patchy and poorly mapped because the species is small, cryptic, and inhabits remote terrain. Recent camera-trap and spotlighting surveys have extended known occurrence and confirmed populations long suspected from rare sightings.
