The team recovered a T-lymphotropic, reverse-transcriptase-positive retrovirus from peripheral blood lymphocytes, distinct from feline leukemia virus, and reproduced disease experimentally. Now called feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), it became the first non-primate lentivirus recognized as a naturally occurring analog of HIV.
