Research overview: Camtrap DP and camera-trap data standards

Camtrap DP (Camera Trap Data Package) is a community data-exchange standard that defines a consistent structure for organizing deployments, media, and observations, enabling camera-trap datasets to be shared, combined, and archived interoperably. This overview surveys why standardization matters, incompatible formats and missing metadata have long hampered combining studies, and how a common schema with canonical fields for locations, timestamps, effort, and identifications unlocks large-scale synthesis and integration with biodiversity repositories such as GBIF. It discusses the elements of the standard, its adoption by tools and platforms, and the broader movement toward FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable) data in wildlife monitoring.
