Himalayan fossils of the oldest known pantherine establish ancient origin of big cats

View source ↗This study described Panthera blytheae, a newly recognized fossil cat from the Tibetan Himalaya that represents the oldest known member of the pantherine lineage, the group containing all living big cats. The well-preserved skull, dated to the late Miocene or early Pliocene, pushed the documented origin of the Panthera lineage back by millions of years and placed it in Central Asia, supporting an Asian, high-altitude cradle for big cats. A combined morphological and molecular analysis positioned Panthera blytheae near the base of the pantherine tree, close to the snow leopard. The discovery reconciled fossil and genetic estimates of when big cats arose, anchored the Panthera lineage in the Tibetan region, and reshaped understanding of where and when the great roaring cats first evolved.
