View source ↗This study examined how sabertooth carnivores killed large prey by comparing the anatomy and inferred mechanics of dirk- and scimitar-toothed forms across multiple lineages. The authors analysed features such as canine shape, gape, neck musculature, and forelimb strength to evaluate competing models of the killing bite, including the canine-shear and throat-bite hypotheses. They argued that sabertooths used their distinctive dentition to deliver a rapid, deep bite to the soft tissues of the neck of immobilized prey, severing vital structures and causing quick death while minimizing risky stress on the fragile canines. The work synthesized biomechanical evidence into a coherent account of sabertooth predation and is frequently cited in debates over how these specialized cats dispatched the megaherbivores on which they depended.
